Welcome to my creative journey

 

As a single mother of two boys, I transitioned from a career in finance in London to pursue my passion for craftsmanship. This took me to the serene forests of East Sussex where I became a Coppice craft and charcoal maker. Working with these materials was a magical experience and a far cry from the monotony of city life. My passion for creativity was forever expanding and the need to travel and explore took me to France in 2002.

 

Whilst in France I renovated an old farmhouse sat in beautiful woodlands a short drive from the Pyrenees. I soon married and had 2 sons. Due to poor health and Brexit, I returned to the UK this time to Cornwall, where I studied for a BA in Contemporary Crafts at Falmouth University in 2016 and gained a first in the process.

 

After university, and family life with my 2 young boys, I focused on ceramics, specialising in Raku.

 

Raku, an ancient Japanese technique involves removing the piece out of the kiln at 1000 degrees celsius and placing it in a combustible material for ten minutes. This process makes the glaze crack and allowing smoke to enter the body of the clay giving a crackled effect. The piece is then plunged into cold water, where sometimes there‘s a risk of breakage due to thermal shock. Over time and experience, knowing how the materials react is all part of the beauty of Raku.

Each piece reflects my dedication to Raku artistry, resilience of life and death experiences, with a great influence coming from the sea and my surroundings.

I now live in Seaford and currently exhibiting at the Crypt Gallery in Seaford East Sussex.
